Bicycling/Walking

Hilton Head Island, South Carolina

In addition to the nearly 12 miles of beach which is perfect for bicycling at low tide, Hilton Head boasts an additional 50 miles of bicycle trails. That doesn't even include another 50 miles of paths and shared roads inside the private plantation communities (reserved for community residents and renters inside those communities).

You will see signage along the pathways which provide an island-wide map on one side and a localized map on the other, to assist your navigation.

Just off the bridges into Hilton Head Island is Pinckney Island, a national wildlife preserve that is a 4,053 acre wildlife sanctuary. No motor vehicles are allowed north of the public parking lot. Over 14 miles of unpaved trails on the island are suitable for walking and cautious bicycling. In addition to the beautiful and dense flora you will also likely see a variety of alligators and reptiles, waterfowl, shorebirds and wading birds including, white ibis, herons, egrets and more.

If you are really lucky, you may see a bald eagle or two from the active bald eagles nest located on the refuge. Alligators and other reptiles also inhabit the island.
